What We Changed in Saunders

Edition 001 is based on T. Bailey Saunders’s public-domain English translations. It is an edited modernization, not a new translation from German.

The editorial rule

We changed older English when it created needless difficulty. We retained period wording when it remained immediately clear.

What changed

Obsolete spellings such as “to-day” became “today.” “Whilst” became “while.” “Amongst” became “among.” We also corrected spacing around footnote markers and a small number of typographical errors.

The final interior contains a limited set of lexical changes. Each was checked against Saunders’s text, and the finished PDF was inspected to confirm that obsolete wording was removed from the searchable text layer rather than hidden beneath replacement text.

What stayed

We retained Saunders’s sentence rhythm, Schopenhauer’s examples and qualifications, quoted source wording, and dated or uncomfortable judgments. “Nay” remains where it marks an escalation that “indeed” would weaken. Clear phrases such as “that is to say,” “ought to,” and “by means of” were not rewritten merely to make the prose sound contemporary.

How the edition is documented

The source of every selection appears at the back of the book. The Note on the Text identifies the base edition, translator, kinds of intervention made, and limits of those interventions. All twelve selections are complete.
